Home Page  Records British Dance Bands Sound Files Contact Me
O.R.B.S. (The Overseas Recorded Broadcasting Service) was set up in World War Two as part of E.N.S.A. to provide recorded entertainment to the forces stationed in Britain. The majority of these are in the form of 15 or 30 minute radio shows taken from, or based upon, BBC transmissions.
NOTE: E.N.S.A. was the Entertainments National Service Association. Although this did sterling work during WWII, it was occasionally dubbed "Every Night, Something Awful".

The original records rarely turn up and, as far as I know, have not been documented anywhere until now.

This page is an attempt to list the known items and send out a plea for more information. While I am interested in obtaining the original records (if they are of interest to me from a dance band perspective), I am also very interested in the information and maybe tape/CD/mp3 transfers of records in your own collections. I am also happy to collaborate to help to complete programs.

There are two distinct types: those in the radio show format (labelled "Services Calling" or sometimes "ENSA Calling" or just O.R.B.S), the others are studio recordings labelled "Services Library". I shall list these library records at the end of this page.

I am listing the records alphabetically by radio show. This seems to be the best way I can think of. The issue numbers mentioned on some sides are usually only shown either in the run-off area of the disc or on the label.

Most of the recordings and/or pressings were done by E.M.I., but other companies were called upon to help the war effort and these can be recognised by the matrix number prefixes/suffixes as follows:

2EN - E.M.I.
ARO - not known.
ENSA - not known. Some show both ENSA and 2EN matrices and I have seen others which were pressed by Decca. My current thought is that an unidentified company recorded them, then EMI or Decca pressed up the records.
IBC - International Broadcasting Company
LSS - Levy's Sound Studios
ORBS - not sure, probably same as UPC
TL - Towers of London
UP, UPC, UPH - Universal Programmes Corporation
Note: Just to confuse matters, I have a "Towers of London" record here which has TL- matrices printed on the label, but has the same number, prefixed with UPC in the wax!

There may be others I've not seen, as there are thousands of these records and they turn up very infrequently.

Peter Copeland, in an article in "The Historic Record" (I think) worked out a method to determine the recording date for any EMI "2EN" masters as follows:  The 2EN series started in spring 1942 and ended on March 31, 1948.
Matrix No + 2500; divide result by 3000, then add 1941.
This will give you the year and possibly a decimal place showing how far through the year. e.g. 1945.5 would mean the middle of 1945. Peter says it is accurate within about three months. At least it can be used as a guide to these recordings.
I will put these calculated dates in brackets under the program numbers.

As usual, if you can help with extra information, please email me.
