Launched in 1913,
Phoenix was Columbia's answer to the cheap imports; the records cost 1/1 and
were a good challenge to the likes of Coliseum, Scala et al. The fare
was the usual mix of popular music: vocal, marches, light music, ragtime, xylophone
& banjo solos. The catalogue was numeric with an O prefix.
starting at O1, and with an X-series matrix. Some were made in USA and
the labels stated this under the label's name. Phoenix records were
available for about 2 years. The X- matrix number is usually a control
number covering the original Columbia master number. This can be seen in
relief under the label on some issues, and I have shown it in brackets
after the X-number where known. The few very high catalogue numbers known (over O300) are Regals with Phoenix labels pasted over; on these no artist names are shown, just the type of music. The reason for doing this is currently unknown, presumably a way of clearing old Regal stock. |
Please e-mail me if you can help me fill in the gaps in any of these series.
My thanks to
Richard Parkes, whose listing
provided the majority of the initial information on this page. This has been
added to, substantially, by research undertaken by a combination of
Frank
Andrews, Arthur Badrock, Alan Williams, Mike Langridge and Bill Dean-Myatt.
Thanks also to the following for additional details:
Peter Andrews, Mike Atkins, Graham Farnell, Norman Field, Frank Jeal,
Richard Prout, Mark Rehmann, Chris Steward
Page last updated on: October 03, 2024
NOTE: An * against the artists' name
signifies an American recording.
Phoenix records always show a control number on the label. This is either in the
X- series or the B- series (for the later paste-over issues). The numbers shown
in brackets after these controls are the original master numbers, where known,
but many Pheonix records appear to be original recordings.
