Peacock Stores started as
a Penny Bazaar in Warrington, Cheshire in 1884, founded by Albert Peacock.
Eventually it developed into a chain of shops, selling home goods, rather
like Woolworth's. It was quite usual for general stores such as this to
sell records. The records bearing the shops' name, Peacock, date to
1933-1934, based on the dates of the recordings. However, it may be that
the shops sold other makes of records over the years. It is believed that
Peacocks moved their headquarters to Cardiff in the 1940s. I was always told that Peaocks were based in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, but that seems to be a misunderstanding, and it may be that West Bromwich was the base for the Midlands operation of the shop chain. Peacock records are surprisingly rare, and so we can assume the experiment with having one's own record label, or even with selling records at all, was not very successful. There were three series of Peacock record, all roughly from the same period and the label design was almost identical for all three. In each case, the price was 1/- each. The P-100 series were pressed from Panachord and Winner masters owned by English Decca or Brunswick. The series may have reached P-200, (the highest known to date is P-199). Generally all were issued under pseudonyms, though there are exceptions, (some of the last few issues used the correct artists' names), and all were generally also available on the more usual issues of Brunswick, Decca, Panachord or Winner, though I have a couple which don't seem to have been otherwise issued in Britain; there may be others. The BP-600 series were pressed by British Homophone using their Sterno masters. The extent of the series is unknown; the highest number reported is BP-637. All were also available on Sterno and all were issued under pseudonyms. Thirdly, an 8" series also using British Homophone masters, from their Plaza label, were also available and were in a PS-200 range; the highest number yet reported is PS-278. All were also available on Plaza and all were issued under pseudonyms. Finally: I've never seen a Peacock record sleeve or record catalogue; do they exist? |
Bill Dean-Myatt has spent almost
60
years collecting information on Peacock records. Here is his current position
with the listing, plus information from Arthur Badrock, Jim Hayes and a couple of my own additions.
I have marked a few items
in blue; this means I
haven't checked them personally, but would like confirmation that they are
correct. If you have any additional information, do please email
me with the details.
