Kalliope (pronounced
Kal-eye-oh-pee) records were originally made in Germany for local consumption,
where they were successful for 30 years. The British equivalent was not
so successful, however. It was introduced in 1913 by the Anchor (Anker)
Gramophone Company and cost 1/-. The catalogue numbers were in a
6000-series and German masters were derived from Anker & Kalliope. The British recordings, with 1000- series matrix numbers were recorded by Joseph Blum & Co at their recording rooms in Old Street, London. This was understood to be an exclusive agreement, but when Blum discovered Kalliope was using the recordings to press other record labels, he terminated the agreement and went elsewhere to get his records pressed. Kalliope then had to find another supplier of English recordings, which can be seen here with matrix numbers in an 06800- series starting at catalogue number 6230. This series was used by Anker, who presumably recorded these for Kalliope, but athough the labels state "recorded in London", I have not determined if this were so, or if the performers travelled to Germany to make these recordings. The British issues ceased production with the outbreak of World War I in 1914. |
This is a first attempt at a listing. Please e-mail me if you can help me fill in the gaps in any of these series.
