Jumbo records first appeared in the autumn of 1908. They were produced (as the embossing on the record itself tells us) for Fonotipia Companies and are always 10" diameter. These included Fonotipia itself, an Italian record company which concentrated on operatic recordings, and the International Talking Machine Company, which produced Odeon records. Unusually (or maybe uniquely) for the period, the speed the record should be played at was shown on the labels. This gives us an insight into record speeds at the time, which, as far as Jumbo is concerned, varied between 74rpm and 81 rpm. The label was marketed by Barnett Samuel & Sons Ltd, who also later marketed Decca gramophones.

Jumbo records were manufactured initially in Frankfürt, Germany and subsequently by the Crystalate Manufacturing Company of Tonbridge, Kent. The labels of the first issues had a mysterious empty space instead of the obvious trade mark of an elephant's head, but this seems to have been sorted out pretty quickly after the initial issues. It is possible that Jumbo records were unable to use the elephant head initially due to the image being already registered as a trade mark. Researcher Frank Andrews refers to Lambert (cylinders) and the General Phonograph Co Ltd using the elephant as a trade mark, but it is most likely that it was due to its use by The Universal Music Company who were still producing Elephone records at this time.

Jumbo had been the name of an elephant in London Zoo, reportedly the largest elephant ever known (at least at the time) and since then, the word "jumbo" is used to denote something of extra large size, as well as being a childish nickname for any elephant. Jumbo, the elephant, lived from about 1860 to 1885 and was reported to be between 3 and 4 metres tall to his shoulders.

It was some time before the catalogue number was shown on the label. Generally it was to be found embossed in the area around the label, with numbers as high as the 600s still like this.

The recordings on Jumbo were a mixture of mainly German and British masters, but there were many from other countries. The prefix to the matrix number helps to determine the source and can usually be found inscribed into the record under the edge of the label, though often it is so faint it can barely be identified.
The prefixes are as follows:
LXO - Britain (London)
PO - France (Paris)
SO -  Spain ?
VO - Austria (Vienna)  (possibly)
XBO - Germany (Berlin)

The British recording rooms were at 14, Hamsell Street, London, where I understand the manager was William Ditcham.  The face numbers shown on the labels, usually with an A-prefix, indicate category of repertoire, according to Frank Andrews.

In early 1913, the Lindström company built a new pressing factory in Hertford called The Mead Works. Actually the factory was jointly owned by Lindström and "Fonotipia" (even though Fonotipia itself had been taken over by Lindström in July 1911). Production of Jumbo records was switched to the new factory during 1913.

With the outbreak of World War One in August 1914, the company could no longer receive foreign recordings and relied on those it could make in London, but soon after that the company was taken over by Lindström who closed the Hamsell Street studios and used their own matrices (by then in a 35000 series), which were also used on their budget Coliseum and Scala records, on Jumbo issues. Jumbo records had originally been on sale for 3/- each, but by the time Lindström took charge, the price was reduced, probably to 1/6.

In 1915, the British government introduced the "Trading with the Enemy" acts which prohibited German firms operating at all in Britain. This meant that Lindström had it's offices and factories seized by the government, who put in comptrollers to run them. In 1917, the newly-formed Columbia Graphophone Company bought the old Lindström business from the government; this included the Hertford Record factory and the London recording rooms and the various labels. The Jumbo label carried on as before, but towards the end of the war, it was decided to rename the label "Venus". From May 1919 all new issues and any repressings of existing sides were labelled as Venus Record. The name change came at about number 1581 (the first original Venus record). New issues in the A- and B- prefixed series were dropped, but some did get repressed as Venus Record. The wholesalers were now Lockwoods of City Road, London.

The last Venus Record issue was in 1920, which seems to be about the time when popular music tastes were changing and maybe the label was considered part of the old days and sales were low. The highest Venus record found is 1625, issued in February 1920.

You may notice that some catalogue numbers are duplicated in the non-prefixed section below. From Frank Andrews' writings, I believe this is because some sides were later re-recorded and issued, and hence have a different matrix number (and later issue date). I do not currently know the reason this was done.

I have included Venus records in this listing for completeness and would be interested to know of any Jumbo records which were issued later as Venus records. Any I know of or am told about will be marked with a small "v" next to the catalogue number.
