One of the more eccentric flexible
records available during the late 1920s and early 1930s, Goodson (named
after the company's owner, Jack Goodson) were made out of a flexible
white material known as Rhodoid. They cost 1/9 and purchasers
were encouraged to play them with a used needle; "Greater purity of
sound is thus produced", according to the publicity. U.S. masters were from
Emerson, Grey Gull, Banner & QRS. UK masters recorded by Goodson were used
later on (these have an S- prefixed master number). The vast majority are dance records
or popular vocals with the occasional more
"serious" item thrown in, sometimes using early continental
masters. The sound quality is good, but, like most flexibles, they
suffer from warping, though not as badly as Filmophone records.
The first records were produced in 1928 as demonstation records, but, just as they were about to go into production in June 1929, it was discovered the material was very imflammable and the Home Office stopped production. Once the new "non-flam" material had been created (Rhodiod) and production re-started, it was December 1929. The earliest Goodsons used masters from Emerson, which by this time were nearly a year old, and so the "hits" were not very up-to-date. Although this mattered less in those days, it must have caused reduced sales. Many of these earliest Goodsons have no catalogue number. The proper catalogue started at 101, running into the mid-300s. A 7" series was also produced (with a 7000-series catalogue), using masters from U.S. Marathon records. These were sold for 1/- between January and June 1930. Although described as "hits", there were two years old by this time, and only one side was a standard "Tin-Pan Alley" song, always coupled with a non-copyrighted one. It should be noted that the recordings used on Marathon and 7" Goodson were original masters and not dubs of 10" issues. Although the same tunes can be found in both sizes with the same master number, they are different takes, not "dubs" (transfers). Courtesy of Richard Prout, I have now included an image of the Goodson Nursery Rhyme album (see right). Goodson also produced advertising records. These were part of their usual issues, but with adverts printed, in place of the Goodson logo. If you have any of these, do send me good images. Paul Buck has kindly started the ball rolling with a "Boots" example (both sides, as they are dfferernt). |

Firstly, the standard 10" series: [The earliest
Goodsons did not have catalogue numbers - these aren't shown here].

All the dance recordings from
Emerson are believed to be by Fred Hall & his Orchestra (except the Lou Gold
sides); Hall was musical director at Emerson during this period.
So far, no original Emerson issues have been found for these recordings; some were issued on Bell and the Grey Gull group labels in the USA, but most have only been traced to issues on Goodson and Duophone in the UK. It would appear that Emerson had ceased production of 10" records by late 1927 and were possibly making records specifically for Grey Gull and for exporting to the UK.
