The first Gamage label (actually
labelled "A.W. Gamage") was manufactured by Crystalate for A. W. Gamage
Ltd, of Holborn, London, a well-known department store. The records used
masters from the Invicta Record Company, also issued on their own
"Guardsman" label. These recordings date from pre-1920. The known
examples imply that there are just over 100 different A.W. Gamage issues
(numbered logically from 1), which also implies the label wasn't around
for very long. (Note: There was an earlier series, labelled "Champion
Gamage", which will be found in the "C" section of my listings). From the early to mid- 1920s, the second Gamage label was produced by The British Homophone Company, using masters they also issued on their "Homochord" label, i.e. English Vocalion, American Vocalion, Pathe and possibly Emerson, too, along with Homochord masters of course, and latterly some sides recorded and manufactured by The Gramophone Company for British Homophone (some of which were from their Zonophone catalogue). The catalogue numbers are in a G-500 series and they run to just over G-700. Some, if not all, of those using Pathe masters have a GC- catalogue number, but are part of the same G-series. Finally (I think) there was a Gamage Morse record, of which I only have the scan and have no idea as to the period of the record. Gamage records, in whichever guise, are very scarce, implying they sold in quite small quantities. |
Please e-mail me if you can help me fill in the gaps in any of these series. Page last updated on October 02, 2024

Note: On the above issue, the YR-matrices (ex-Zonophone) are what is shown on the label, but the HR-matrices (ex-Homochord) are what is in the "wax". Hence this particular record is actually the first one shown above, but I have shown the other issue as it is just possible that there are two different recordings available on Gamage G-702.
