British Dance Bands

Britain's equivalent of "Hit-of-the-Week" records were available, like their American counterparts, weekly from news-stands. They were only available between April 1932 and January 1933, however, which was after the US Hit-of-the-Weeks had ceased production. Made of cardboard with a thin celluloid coating, the recording quality was good, but a bit thin, probably due to the fine grooving to allow two (almost) full-length tunes to be put on one side. The main series ran from EN-0 upwards and were mainly British matrices, with just a handful of American ones, some from Hit of the Week, and some recorded in America specifically for Durium in Britain, the latter being very rare, allegedly as they were quickly withdrawn due to a contract infringement by vocalist Chick Bullock. (I have my doubts about this as any contract infringement by a recording artist in the USA would surely have no affect on records sales in another country ?).

Durium Records were produced by Durium Products (Great Britain) Ltd of 107, Buckingham Avenue, Slough.

I am presuming the news-stands would not just have the current week's issue, but would have some of the previous issues available as well. Should anyone have any memory or story of Durium records being bought, I would be interested to know more details.

Catalogue Series:
There were a number of series, and Durium had strong links in Europe and Scandinavia as you will see below.
The main series were: EN-0 (English); GE-1 (German), N-1 (Norway) and SC-101 (Scandinavia).
The other series are fairly short-lived ones with BD-, F-, M-, O-, and R- prefixes with only the T- prefix series lasting longer. The reason for all these series is obscure. After the demise of the EN-series in early 1933, most later issues were lablled as Durium Super (see second image).

Matrix numbers:
No prefix - US recordings, except later small records with 5000- series matrix numbers.
E-1000, E-5000 -London, England (location not known).
D-100 - Copenhagen, Denmark.
M- believed to be Milan, Italy.
SD- - London, England; Sound Distributors issues.

Any other prefixes are not known for sure and may be London recordings.

The Durium Record Company wsa based at 107, Buckingham Avenue, Slough, England. The company ceased trading in early 1934. It was taken over (or became) Dubrico Ltd, still in Slough, but then was bought by Sound Distributors Ltd of London. By this time the production of 10" commercial records had ceased and the company only made special, mainly advertising, issues in various small sizes from 3" to 6" in diameter until 1936 when it would appear that records made of Durium went out of fashion.

It should be noted that European Durium records always have the label name in lower-case; those with DURIUM (capitals) as the name are US issues, outside the confines of this page, though it would appear that some of the smaller disks, often those for children use DURIUM on both sides of the Atlantic.

About the material:
Durium was a synthetic resin invented in 1929 by Dr. Hal Trueman Beans, who was professor of Chemistry at Columbia University, USA. It is described as flexible, tasteless, odourless amd highly resistent to heat. It is surprising the material isn't better known as one would have thought it would have had many uses at the time, or even nowadays. I believe it was used in casting metal newspaper type and for non-metallic parts in aeroplanes.

How the records were manufactured.
The hot liquid resin (at about 230° centigrade) was spread over wide sheets of thin cardboard and immediately 12 records were simultaneously pressed. The resin cooled and hardened very quickly at which point the details are printed onto the central area of the records and the backs are printed (if necessary) and lacquered, allegedly to stop curling, though they still usually end up being quite curled. Finally the discs are punched out. The process was very quick and many records could be made in a short time, though it is not known what the pressing runs were for each weekly issue.

Playing a Durium record.
At first glance, Durium records appear unplayable. They are invariably very curled. This is due to the different expansion rates of the carboard and the Durium resin. Each record came with a Durium record clip to hold it flat onto the turntable. These are quite scarce nowadays, but a substitute can be made quite easily. Some of the later issues had the clip already stapled to the record. Once the record is held flat, it will play fine. The hard Durium material will cope very well with the heavy soundbox and steel needle of a gramophone, though I would never recommend using an old gramophone in preference to a modern light-weight pick-up and diamond stylus for playing records. Duriums have no problem with the fatal warpage caused by shrinking which is common with other flexible records such as Filmophone, Phonychord and Goodson.

Post-WWII Durium issues.
In the 1950s there was another Durium label made in England of standard shellac, probably by Decca, which contained Italian music recorded by Durium of Italy (see last image - thanks to Bill Dean-Myatt for this image). There were also later shellac Durium records made in Italy. I'm not sure what the link is between the synthetic resin records and the post-war shellac ones; probably no link at all other than a re-use of the name.

The late Hans Koert spent many years researching and collecting Durium records and documented it in his "blog" at http://hitoftheweek.blogspot.co.uk/ , but that webpage is no longer available. What I have done is to try to present the various Durium series in an easy to read format, but almost all the details are from Hans' indefatigable research.

I have listed the 10" series first, in alphabetical prefix sequence. Then following those are the smaller discs.

The L-series (below) is a new one on me (2024). This example is an Italian recording, but the record was still made in Slough, England. It dates from 1934.

Most of the earlier issues below, by Phil Spitalny's Orchestra, have no matrix numbers - just the catalogue number is shown in the record.

The first have an E-5000 series matrix. Catalogue numbers, where used, have the same number but usually without the prefix, so I will list this series by matrix number only.
These first ones are all 4" diameter, and are mixture of styles and some were issued as "Durium For The Young Folks" or "Durium Junior". The others mainly just have the title of the recording without any actual label name.

The next series are called The "Talkie" Cigarette Card. They are just under 3" square and were free with Record Cigarettes. The reverse of each record has an image and a brief bigraphy of the personality printed on it, along with a catalogue number printed in the lower right-hand corner. The records were in their own transparent sleeves and were slipped into the cigarette packet.
There are 5 different known series, each one stating that there are 25 in each series. If this is so, then there are still a lot to find, but it is believed only about 36 out of a projected 125 total records were ever issued. Again these are using a 5000-series matrix number (but no E- prefix) which seems to continue from the one above, but it has been reported to me that the matrix number is not visible on many of the original records found.

This final batch of 5000- series are nearly all advertising records. the size varies and will be shown against each issue, and the matrix number sometimes has an E- prefix. Also, some issues have another reference number, like a catalogue number. All this will be shown below, but the listing is in matrix number order.
Note: Sizes are approximate; for instance the 3" ones are usually between 3" and 3½".

Finally, the Sound Distributor Series. Like the ones above, there are made in various sizes and some also have a reference number. As before, though, these will be listed in matrix number order. The matrix number is in an SD- series.
I do not know if the gaps in this listing represent mini-Durium records which have not been reported, or not issued, or whether Sound Distributors used the numbers for other purposes or for records issued in other formats or on other labels.
