Originally a German-only
label, launched in 1907, Dacapo appeared in Britain in 1910 with a
catalogue starting at 1, priced at 2/6 (12.5p). The label was not
dissimilar to Zonophone to look at; presumbly a deliberate ploy by the
German company. The London agent was William Barraud at 69, Clifton
Street, Finsbury, London E.C., and the musical director for London
recordings was Victor Opferman, formerly of J.E. Hough's Edison Bell
Company. Barraud's office moved to 1, New Inn Yard, Great Eastern Street,
London E.C. in November 1911. It is likely that Barraud's offices included
recording rooms used for London Dacapo recordings. The German company
would most likely have sent recording experts over to London to supervise
any recordings to ensure they were of the same quality as the German ones.
In March 1912, 12" Dacapo records costing 4/- were announced.
The prices were reduced in the autumn of 1912, mainly due to a price war triggered by Lindstrom's introduction of Coliseum & Scala records at 1/6. Dacapo records were then priced at 2/- for 10" records and 3/- for the 12" ones. At the same time, The Dacapo Record Company Ltd was incorporated, and the registered office was initially at 10, Copthal Avenue, London, almost immediately moving to 5, City Road, London E.C. where the company had established recording rooms. (City road was the home to many record companies at the time). Barraud was no longer the agent, but the manager was E.F.G. Hale (known as "alphabet" Hale due to his initials). William Barraud continued to record at the New Inn Yard address, but was recording for the new Invicta Record label, for which he was the London agent. In 1913, the company became part of the Carl Lindstrom group, but the manufacture of Dacapo records was never switched to Britain; all Dacapo records were made in Germany. Sales of Dacapo records to Britain ceased on the outbreak of WWI with some later issues (presumbly residual stock) having the place of origin (Berlin) expunged from the label. Most British Dacapo issues were Dacapo original recordings, though I have not worked out which were recorded in London and which in Berlin. However, it would seem there was quite a lot of cross-company use of masters in Germany at this time, between Dacapo, Beka, Bel Canto and Invicta (Berolina) and Frank Andrews reports that most of these records were manufactured at one (or more) huge pressing plants in Germany, likely to have been in Berlin, which would explain this. You may see that some of the Dacapo masters in the list below also show a 5000-series number in brackets, which is the Bel Canto master number. It isn't clear to me which company made the original master! The E- prefix in the masters below (not always present on the records) is understood just to mean it was pressed for England, not necessarily recorded there, but maybe the different number ranges had some significance, though I don't know at present what that was. the D-prefix presumably means Germany (Deutschland). My current theory is that the English recordings started at matrix number 11500, running to over 22300. Thanks to Bill Dean-Myatt for the label scan, showing the design for the 12" records. |
