Citizen records are
scarce and rather mysterious. They first appeared in
1916 and were a Crystalate-manufactured product using a 3000 catalogue series (see
first image) and masters from the Invicta Company (Guardsman label). Judging by the numerical range of the known issues, this
series was quite short-lived. These Citizen record were made for export
to the United States, for sale by the Orchestrelle Company. At the time,
Orchestrelle, allegedly the largest musicial instrumrnt manufacturer in
the US, had just started seling gramophones made for them, so it made
sense to do the same with records. They must have sold in quite small numbers, judging by how scarce they are, despite the MD of Invicta talking up how mane thousands of Citizen records he'd produced! The label re-appeared in 1921, when they were being produced by "Vocalion" and the label changed to a light & dark mauve design (see second example) before changing to the red and gold label seen here (third scan) for the last few issues in 1925. The highest mauve label I have seen is No. 843, Please let me know (send a scan?) of any higher than this. The Vocalion-produced Citizen records used a 3-digit series starting at 501 and running into the late 800s before ceasing in the mid 1920s. As you can tell, little is known about the label, the size of the catalogue, or for whom they were produced, though the records have tented to turn up in the Liverpool and Manchester districts, suggesting a seller from that area. Frank Andrews reports (in Hillandale News No. 224) that the distributor was Messrs Phineas Tavriger & George Solomon Dudon of 45, Stafford Street, Liverpool. The Vocalion period used the usual masters; apart from UK recorded Vocalion (ACO) matrices, there are Gennett and Vocalion masters from the U.S. |
Here is a listing of the Citizen issues. This was produced by the late Arthur Badrock and much of the information came from Dave Lomax who, some years ago, turned up a whole boxful of Citizen records. Based on Dave's location (near Manchester), it may be that the proprietor for this label was also based in the north of England.
If you can add anything to this listing,
please
email me,
also let me know which label design it is on (if known).
Thanks to the following for providing more information:
Peter Andrews,
Peter Elliott, Graham Farnell,
Matthew Farrar, Norman Field, Javier Soria Laso,
Bob Lilley, Dave Lomax, Frederick Murphy, James
Parten, Mark Schuler, Markus Schnellbach, Chris Steward, Ken Wiley
First the early 3000- series. All known examples use Guardsman masters from pre-1920.

Now the more familiar series. You will notice many question marks against the original artists & issues and this is because the original record hasn't been checked to find the source; The American issues can be derived from Gennett or Vocalion.
