In the 1920s, Edison Bell revived the Bell name for their 5½" (later 6") children's label. Catalogue numbers started at 250 in 1921 and the label survived until 1926 by which time the numbers had reached into the 400s. Dance band items specially recorded for the format may be found. All issues are British recordings. 6" recordings continued to be issued after this time by Edison Bell, but were issued on the Crown label. The earliest issues have a very small (1.7") label and a slightly different design (see first image right). The highest I have with this design is No. 321, but as usual, later pressings of lower numbers have the later label design. A Bell Export series, with the same design of label was also produced at the same time. These had catalogue numbers starting at 700, and included French repertoire not otherwise issued in the standard "The Bell" series. My thanks to Jan Onderwater for the image of one of these. |
Please e-mail me if you can help me fill in the gaps in any of these series.
Thanks to the following people for sending me extra details: Martin Astell, Mike Atkin, Robin Bratchley, Norman Burgess, Greg Butler, Paul Cleary, Graham Farnell, Norman Field, David Fisher, Robert Girling, Roland Givan, Robert Godridge, Jolyon Hudson, Mike Jones, Jonathan Krull, Mike Langridge, Justin Macauley, Phil Mackie, Adam Miller, Richard Prout, Adrian Smith, Jamie Weston, Wes Williams.
Thanks to the late Arthur Badrock's indefatigable researching,
and help from others (above) this is now complete. There are just a few matrix
numbers to fill in now, and some artists' names to identify.
They start off at 5½", increasing to 6" at number 364. All are anonymously
issued, with just the title and a description of the type of music. The names of
the actual artists are mainly taken from Arthur's master list with some
identifications by myself. The dance band items all appear, on aural evidence, to be
by the Edison Bell studio band of the period.
NOTE: Some of the artist details have been taken from a BELL catalogue. These will be shown within inverted commas until checked aurally.
